Tamla Records was founded on January 12th, 1959, the following year evolving into Motown Records. The black-owned record label played a crucial part in integration within the music industry, as well as becoming famous for its iconic artists including The Jackson 5, The Temptations, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas and many more of some of our favourite artists!
That's why we're celebrating Tamla Motown’s anniversary with a dedicated night on Saturday, January 12th. We'll be playing the best tracks that came from the record label during its prime in the 1960s, alongside live music from Birmingham soul five piece The Midnight City Soul Band.
Known for their exceptional and spontaneous Northern Soul and Motown covers, The Midnight City Soul Band will cover all the classics with exciting Hammond organ, tenor sax and electric guitar thrown in the mix! DJs ‘Fozzie’ (Love Train) and Mazzy Snape (The Big Birmingham Soul Night) will be playing Motown tracks throughout the night from the likes of Michael Jackson and Marvin Gaye to The Marvelettes, Mary Wells and many more!
Motown was, and is, a huge influence to us here at The Night Owl. Since opening our doors over three years ago, we've championed music from all genres and eras including music from the prestigious Motown label. We're looking forward to celebrating such an important record label, and of course getting down to some of our favourite artists!
