You may have heard through the grapevine that the second annual Birmingham Music Awards took place on Thursday, May 16th at our neighbours The Mill. It was a great chance for Birmingham's musicians, producers, venues, teachers and backstage marvels to celebrate all the hard work put in to make Birmingham the vibrant, music filled city is it. We are more than thankful to just be included!
However, we are pleased to announce that our monthly disco, funk, soul (and sometimes hip hop) extravaganza Le Freak won best club night at the awards! We always knew Le Freak was an unforgettable night, but winning this award against some of Birmingham's longest standing club nights is worthy of a celebration!
If you're not in the know, Le Freak is your chance once a month to strut your funky stuff to the biggest disco, funk and soul floor fillers, taking inspiration from the disco delights of the 1970's Studio 54, Saturday Night Fever, Soul Train television shows and more recently Netflix's cult hit The Get Down. As our resident DJs Lee Fisher, Tom Mason and Richard Buckley play everything from Donna Summer, Rick James, Grace Jones, Grandmaster Flash, Sister Sledge, Sylvester, Chic and many more, you guys show us your best moves! Take part in either the Soul Train duo dance off where all eyes are on you, or jump straight in at The Get Down as the dance off circle sees the best hip hop and break dancing moves around.
A big thank you is needed for everyone who is part of Le Freak! All of The Night Owl including the directors, management, bar staff, visuals creator, sound engineer and promoters, who tirelessly put all their effort into every event! A special thanks goes to our designer Adam Williams for funking up every event, as well as our resident Le Freak DJs mentioned above along with every guest DJ we've had the pleasure of hosting. A special shout out is needed to our dance off judges Tori Drew, Sammy Dee and Ed Quigley, as well of course you guys for bringing the disco every time!
